I've written about my aspirations (fantasies) for being a pro basketball player and how a very large majority of my life I truly believed that to be possible. Considering that I work tirelessly towards any goal I obviously have spent a lot of time playing basketball. Just as tirelessly as I worked at the game itself, I felt I worked just as hard to find a quality pickup game at times. I remember running around from court to court in the summer time with friends trying to find just enough people to even get a game of three on three going. Once we were old enough, running turned into driving from court to court. I grew up in a rural area so driving from one court to the next wasn't just driving a few blocks but driving miles to find a game. There were plenty of times that the treasure hunt ended up with just me and a friend and some fierce games of one on one simply because we couldn't find a game.

Sportaneous is an award winning predominantly smart phone based application that allows users to find sports games and group fitness activities easily and efficiently. If you've ever run into a situation similar to what I've described above, Sportaneous can help you. By allowing users to not only connect through their app, but also online, Sportaneous isn't just helping you find sports games and fitness activities but are helping connect like minded individuals. If you're an athlete, think about who your closest friends are. Odds are, you share quite a bit in common and I'd bet that you might have even met a large percentage of them through sport of some kind - basketball, kickball, football, yoga class, spin class, triathlon, etc.
Sportaneous works by displaying a map of your city (As long as your city is New York or San Diego but more cities are coming soon!) with a list of activities going on in your area as shown here:
The app allows users to sort the results being displayed according to what sort of activity is being sought out. Once a game or activity has been found in the chosen area one can easily join, which adds the user to the attendee list and alerts the organizer that someone new has joined. If a game or activity that the user is looking for can't be found, the app allows one to set up their own. Pick a time, place and activity and invite friends to join or just wait for others to find you! There's even a handy message board that allows attendees to plan - decide who's bringing the football, frisbee, yoga mats, etc.
As a Sportaneous sponsored athlete, I'm excited for the opportunity to write guest blog entries on the Sportaneous blog and host group rides and runs. I should mention that Sportaneous can be used for more than just planning and finding group activities. If you share my passion of triathlon, you know that it can be a sometimes isolated sport. I can't count the number of times I wished I could get out for a run with someone or head out to 9W with a group of others for a ride. For all but the most intense sessions, it's always better working out with a partner. Sportaneous can help endurance athletes in just the same way it can help those looking for team based sporting activities.
Keep an eye out for the first group ride, run and blog entry!
In the meantime, stay active, spontaneously with Sportaneous.
